Technical Canyoneering
The Technical Canyoneering course builds on the skills introduced in our Intro to Canyoneering course and expands them into a more advanced technical skill set. The focus is on increasing efficiency, developing stronger problem-solving abilities and taking on greater responsibility within a competent canyon team.
Topics include advanced trip planning, rope work, technical anchors, rigging systems, rappelling decisions, team safety, companion assistance and canyon problem solving. Students will also learn how to evaluate different options, understand the advantages and limitations of various systems and make sound decisions based on the terrain, team and conditions.
The goal of the course is to move beyond simply performing individual skills and begin understanding how those skills work together in real canyon environments. Participants should leave better prepared to tackle intermediate canyons with experienced leaders and mentors while assuming greater responsibility for anchors, rigging and technical problem solving.
We will spend 1-3 days together reviewing core concepts and applying them outdoors. The majority of the course is hands-on, with an emphasis on practical experience, repetition, efficiency and developing the judgment needed to become a stronger and more capable member of a canyon team.
