Multi Pitch Trad Climbing
Multi-Pitch Trad Climbing
This advanced climbing course is designed for competent climbers who want to develop the technical skills, systems and judgment needed for multi-pitch traditional climbing. The course builds on existing climbing fundamentals and places a strong emphasis on efficient movement, protection, rope management and decision-making in longer climbing environments.
Topics include traditional climbing gear, protection placement, lead-fall dynamics, anchor construction, belay station management, rope management, communication and the mental and physical demands of climbing multiple pitches. We will also focus on the transitions that make multi-pitch climbing efficient, including changing leaders, managing the rope at belay stations and keeping the climbing team organized as the route progresses.
Students will gain a better understanding of both the leader and follower roles. Even climbers who do not plan to lead will develop skills that make them stronger partners, more capable seconds and more effective belayers on multi-pitch routes. Any lead-climbing practice during the course will be backed up with a top-rope system so students can concentrate on developing sound technique and judgment in a controlled environment.
We will spend 1-2 days together reviewing core concepts and applying them in the field. The majority of the course is hands-on and outdoors, with an emphasis on repetition, efficient systems and building the confidence needed to participate safely and effectively on multi-pitch trad climbs.
