Intro to Canyoneering

The Intro to Canyoneering course is designed for those who are completely new to the sport as well as participants who want to refresh and strengthen their understanding of the fundamentals. A solid grasp of the basics is essential for anyone entering technical canyons and this course provides the foundation needed to participate safely, confidently and effectively as part of a team.

Topics include trip planning, equipment selection, rappelling, basic rigging, canyon movement, communication, hazard awareness and general safety. Students will also begin developing the judgment and situational awareness needed to recognize common canyon challenges and make sound decisions in the field.

The goal is not simply to introduce individual techniques, but to help students understand how the core systems of canyoneering work together. By the end of the course, participants should be better prepared to contribute as capable team members while continuing to learn under the guidance of experienced leaders and mentors.

We will spend 1-3 days together reviewing core concepts and then applying them outdoors. The majority of the course is hands-on, with an emphasis on practical experience, repetition and building a strong foundation for continued growth in the sport.
